Our first big project was the swimming pool. Let’s start off with a few fun facts about the swimming pool. Did you know:

• The swimming pool in town belongs to the Old Gillian Union – yes that’s right! It belongs to the Old Gillian Union!
  
• The sand filter takes 140 x 40kg of sand which means 5,6 tons of sand!
  
• The chlorine for the six month season is approximately 40 x 25kg dry chlorine barrels which means 1 ton of chlorine!

What was done?

• The sand in the filter has been replaced.
• Chlorine for the season was procured.
• The pool was drained and cleaned with a high pressure hose.
• Cracks were filled and fixed.
• For better visual guidance, the faded centre lines at the bottom of the pool were cleaned out and redone with a rubber-base filling.
• The inside of the pool got a new coat of paint as well as the edges of the pool.
• 145 filter tubes were each individually opened and cleaned.
• 6 anti-turbulence lane ropes were installed.

We have since successfully hosted one of the six Eastern Cape biathlon league events. The upgrades to the swimming pool enables us to host and pitch for more provincial and/or inter-provincial events.

There was a big need for spectator seating at both Gill Primary and Gill College at the netball/tennis courts.

Together with both Gill Primary and Gill College, we were able to recycle wood that was in storage at the schools to erect benches along these courts.

In total 12 spectator benches were erected at Gill Primary and 19 benches at Gill College. This provide for more spectator seating next to the courts and
is in full use with every sport event.

• Tiling of the floors
• Replacing all toilets and urinals
  
• Painting of the walls, doors and ceilings
  
• Installing soap dispensers and paper roll holders
  
• Installing toilet roll holders and placing of bins at each toilet
  
• Installing mirrors
  
• It is important for us to provide the learners of Gill College and any visitors a hygienic environment.
